After 10 months Tania has completed her work as script editor on the children’s animated series Sumo Mouse. But then, completely out of the blue, she has been signed up to write the pilot episode for a brand new series. As soon as that’s done it’s onto the telemovie… yes, you heard right, telemovie! Unfortunately, we’re unable to go into details but it’s all systems go at this point.

Between projects, Tania’s taking a short break during which she is working hard devising a new tv project in collaboration with Chris Anastassiades (The Wog Boy, Yolngu Boy). Though it too is pretty top secret, rumour has it that it draws largely on Tania’s experiences in the world of showbiz. Tania was pretty tight lipped about it other than to say

it’s controversial, courageous and damned near the most hilarious thing I’ve ever done…and I’ve only written the first page!

From the Weekend Australian, February 3 – 4, 2007
By Sandy George, Film Writer, Picture by Alan Pryke

Female comedy writer-performers get a good run on television but rarely make films – an imbalance that Melbourne comedian Tania Lacy hopes to redress.

Her romantic comedy, Blogger Girl, was named by the Australian Film Commission this week as one of eight low-budget film scripts that will be put through a series of workshops aimed at getting them a step closer to being made.

Blogger Girl is about a young woman who uses the internet to pretend she is working overseas in a super-successful career.

“She fakes the life she believes she always should have lived, but in the process undergoes a metamorphosis,” Lacy said.

Lacy has created stage shows and short films, hosted sketch comedy gigs on television and was the check-out chick in Titsiana Booberini, the short film that led to its director, Robert Luketic, being offered the Hollywood film, Legally Blonde.

People still stop Lacy in the street to talk about her ABC show The Factory, although it hasn’t been on air for more than 15 years. She attributes the show’s success in part to its low budget.

“We had to nick gaffer tape out of the news department’s cars,” she said. “We were forced to be creative because we had so little money.”

IndiVision, which is the name of the AFC’s development initiative, clearly recognizes it is also possible to make good films on the smell of an oily rag, providing the subject matter is suitable and all aspects of the film are carefully thought-through well in advance.

Lacy hopes IndiVision’s national and international advisers will help her make a better film.

“You get so close to a script it becomes difficult to see what has to be fixed,” she said.

“I’ve not done a feature before and I need to know what I’m in for and how hard it’s going to be.”

Lacy is working on Blogger Girl with director Daina Reid (The Secret Life of Us) and producers Robyn Kershaw (Looking for Alibrandi) and Romy Moshinsky.

Like most filmmakers, Lacy is juggling several projects. She is writing a television series and is employed to add more jokes to G2G: Got to Go, an animated children’s series now in production. She also has a 13-month-old son, Per.

She originally trained as a dancer, but that career came to an end when she shattered her knee. “The accident was probably my biggest break because it jettisoned me into comedy, the arena I probably should always have been in,” she said.
